Go Green Fair, 6-8pm, 95th Street Water Tower Plaza

The Borough of Stone Harbor will host the 6th Annual Go Green Fair in an effort to promote sustainability and make visitors aware of initiatives that can help preserve, conserve, and restore our beautiful world. Vendors will include New Jersey American Water, Marine Mammal Stranding Center, Cape May MUA, Cape May County Library, and more!

Avalon National Night Out, 6-8pm, 30th Street Parking Lot & Surfside Park

Join the Avalon Police Department and a variety of organizations for National Night Out including fun activities for the kids, a tour of municipal trucks, fire and rescue trucks, characters, face painting, rides, music and more! Head to the beach after the celebration for the Beach Movie feature of the week, “Jaws.”

The Stone Harbor Police Department will host the annual National Night Out celebration at the Water Tower Plaza. The event will feature a bounce house, an array of emergency vehicles for children to explore, activities, games, and snacks.

History Center Lecture: History of the Jersey Shore, 6pm, Virtual

Have you ever wondered why there is an elephant-shaped building on the beach in Margate? A concrete ship stuck in the sand off Cape May Point? A town named Loveladies? Or Ship Bottom? Join the Avalon History Center for a virtual tour of the coast’s history, from the long-ago days of pirates, shipwrecks, and lighthouses to the founding of today’s most popular summer resorts. Ocean Galleries Presents Josef Kote “Healing,” Artist Appearances Saturday, Aug. 7, 7-10pm, Sunday, Aug. 8, Noon-2pm, Ocean Galleries, 9618 Third Ave.

Ocean Galleries will feature modern impressionist painter Josef Kote for a limited engagement and fine art exhibition Aug. 7-9. Kote will be on hand for a unique meet-the-artist experience Aug. 7 from 7-10pm and Aug. 8 from Noon-2pm. Kote’s trademark bold brushwork and vibrant colors will be on display. The exhibit is open to the public, but RSVP is strongly suggested.

Make sure you log all of your summer reading by the end of the day on Saturday, Aug. 7. Readers who complete the program will receive a special prize. Winners will be contacted starting Monday, Aug. 16.

Fishing with the Mayor, 9am, Avalon Fishing Pier

Kids ages 5-12 are invited to join avid fisherman Marty Pagliughi for the annual Fishing with the Mayor event. Sign up ahead of time with the Avalon Recreation Department, and join Mayor Marty for a morning of baiting and fishing off the Avalon Fishing Pier! No equipment necessary, poles and bait will be provided.

Cooking instructor, writer and educator Vanessa Young will show how to make flavorful and sophisticated nonalcoholic drinks that are perfect for entertaining and everyday enjoyment. Learn about the art of making drinks, syrups, infusions, and edible garnishes. Young will also explore how to use herbs and spices to approximate the flavors of popular cocktail spirits. AHLOA Annual Meeting, 10am, Avalon Community Hall

The Avalon Home and Land Owners Association will hold its annual meeting on Aug. 14 at the Avalon Community Hall. The event will feature a presentation by Mayor Martin Pagliughi followed by a Q&A session. Blessing of the Sea and Outdoor Mass, 10:30am, 81st Street Recreation Field

All are welcome to join St. Brendan the Navigator Parish for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary outdoor mass and “Wedding of the Sea.” Father William Kelly will host outdoor mass (weather permitting) at the 81st Street recreation field, followed by the “Wedding of the Sea.”

10th Annual Reeds & Seeds Watermelon Festival, 10am-1pm, The Reeds at Shelter Haven, 9601 Third Ave., Stone Harbor

More than a century ago, the Shelter Haven Hotel celebrated its opening with a watermelon-themed event. The Reeds at Shelter Haven brought back this tradition 10 years ago, and will host this family-fun event at the Water Star Grille with carnival-inspired games, watermelon-eating contests, and of course, the crowning of the Reeds & Seeds King and Queen.

History Center Lecture: The Discovery of a Masterpiece, 6pm, Virtual

Mallory Mortillaro will present a virtual lecture detailing her remarkable discovery. Mortillaro serves as the curator of collections for the Hartley Dodge Foundation in Madison, N.J. While she was cataloging the artwork housed inside the Hartley Dodge Memorial, she uncovered a masterpiece that had been lost to the art world since the 1930s. After a year of research, the piece was authenticated as an official work by Auguste Rodin. She will share the story of how a simple art-cataloging project evolved into a search for a mysterious piece’s provenance, and became one of the biggest art finds in recent history.
