Letter from the Editor

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the summer of 2022! Wow, it feels great to say that. If the month of June is any indication, we should all be looking forward to awesome weather, great beach days, and fun-filled evenings cooled by those soothing ocean breezes. And just like the Fourth of July, this issue of the Times is exploding with lots of great reading.

For those people who often wonder, “How can I find out what’s going on?”, the answer is simple: The Times! Our calendar is jam-packed with all the dates and times you’ll need to plan the first full month of summer.

And speaking of making plans, you’ll want to plan to stop by the island’s newest outdoor dining experience, Surfside Rooftop Grill in Stone Harbor. To prepare you, we’ll introduce you to Executive Chef Jason Unger, who will share some of his culinary secrets in our Here’s The Dish feature. And since we’re already outdoors, be sure to check out Mary Lamb’s story on the 35th anniversary of Club 18 Miniature Golf.

Speaking of history, Dave Coskey examines the Buchanan and Damiri families and their involvement in the pizza business in Avalon and Stone Harbor for more than a half-century. Dave also tells us about the beloved huckster of the Seven Mile Beach.

Jean Miersch has some red, white and blue recipes sure to spice up your holiday cookouts. Vicki Parente visits with Jane Seymour before her much-anticipated July show at Ocean Galleries, and Dr. Lenore Tedesco from The Wetlands Institute explores the changes in sea levels; a must-read for anyone loving our barrier island.

Dave Bontempo helps us say goodbye to retiring Avalon Police Captain John Roscoe, and Marybeth Treston Hagan honors the memory of a true Stone Harbor original, Marian Hornsby, in A Lifetime, A Legacy.

Plus, you’ll find our pages packed with all of the features you’ve come to expect in each issue including the island’s hottest must-haves; Fred Dunbar’s Financially Speaking; pages for the kids and a Fourthtastic section of Smilestones.

Have a safe, fun-filled Fourth. I look forward to speaking with you again in August. And our continued thanks for making the Seven Mile Times the favorite read in Avalon and Stone Harbor.
