Letter from the Editor

July is here and with it comes some of the nicest, longest days on the beach. So, get a nice, comfortable chair and dig your toes deep into the sand because this issue of the Times is full of lots of informative and entertaining reading.

First, we’ll introduce you to Avalon’s mayor-elect with a profile of John McCorristin. John was elected in May and will take over for Marty Pagliughi on July 2.

Speaking of milestones, you already know that The Preppy Palm is one of the most popular shopping destinations on the Seven Mile Beach. But did you know that the women’s clothing store is celebrating its 20th anniversary? Mary Lamb will take you behind the scenes of this popular business.

Celeste Whittaker looks at the very successful Avalon Girls’ Lacrosse program. It may be the best-kept secret on the island yet serves as a feeder program for many high schools in South Jersey. And many of its former players not only compete in high school but play on the collegiate level as well.

Staying in the world of sport, Dave Coskey will introduce you to the Ladies of the Court. They’ve been playing tennis in Stone Harbor since 1974! Over the decades, their common love for the game has turned them into great friends, on and off the court.

Thanks to the Avalon History Center, there will be a renewed tradition this month when it hosts The Fabulous Greaseband for a free Sunday night concert at Surfside Park. Get your dancing shoes on!

Dave Bontempo will do his best to help keep you safe this summer. His beach safety report is a staple here in the Times, dedicated to keeping you and your family safe. And if all of this reading makes you hungry, our restaurant feature will remind you that Moran’s Dockside is not only your go-to spot for fishing supplies, it also makes some of the best sandwiches on the island.

There are many other great features, plus everything that you’ve come to expect and enjoy in each issue including: Events at a Glance, your go-to guide for everything happening in Avalon and Stone Harbor; our Must Haves, everything that you simply must have to make your summer complete; plus Times Talk, and tons of Smilestones – as you’d expect during graduation and wedding season.

Thanks to all of you for making the Seven Mile Times the most popular publication here in Avalon and Stone Harbor. Please continue to support all local businesses – they are dedicated to making your visit with us memorable.

And please be safe. The next time that we meet, it will be August … Yikes! Let’s slow this summer down and enjoy it.
