Chillin’ at the Stone Harbor Shiver

The 2023 edition of the Stone Harbor Shiver coincided with St. Patrick’s Day weekend, so you know it had to be another one for the books! The weekend kicked off on Friday night with a Pre-Shiver party at the Yacht Club of Stone Harbor and the opportunity for last-minute Shiver registration. The party featured an Irish buffet, cash bar, auction, 50/50 raffle, a DJ. Participants could also pick up their swag bag that included a Shiver tee or hoodie. Proceeds from the $30 entry fee, the auctions, and the raffle benefit Family Promise of Cape May County, which supports, counsels, and places homeless parents and children in permanent homes; and the Stone Harbor Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the Shiver and other events throughout the year.

Saturday’s festivities began at 10am with Sips & Dips at Fred’s Tavern. At 11:30am, it was time for the Shiver Showdown parade, featuring costumed teams strutting up 96th Street from Third Avenue to the beachfront lot that featured a stage for team performances. Prizes were awarded for best individual costume, best team name, best costumes, best float, and best performance. Immediately following the parade around 1:15pm, the several hundred participants took the plunge in the chilly Atlantic Ocean. It was 43 degrees on the overcast day, with 28 mph gusts making it seem much colder. Needless to say, the shivering plungers were eager to wrap themselves in their towels and change their clothes. Many headed straight to Fred’s Tavern for the after-party that featured live music by the Quinn Brothers.
