“Gardens can be magical,” says Donna Rothman, “when we plant for nature.” Rothman is the chair of the Avalon Environmental Commission, which along with the Avalon Garden Club, is hoping to provide the borough with a bit of that magic, and potential long-term savings to boot.

Outrageous costumes and performances were the order of the day March 16 as the Stone Harbor Shiver Polar Plunge drew hundreds of participants and spectators on St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

In 1969, Herbert Mills made a stand for wetlands protection when he purchased 6,000 acres of coastal salt marsh in southern New Jersey and founded The Wetlands Institute. Mills embarked on a mission to create a research and education center that would forever change the history of Seven Mile Beach, Cape May County, and the region.

Welcome, friends! As we bid farewell to the lingering chill of winter, there’s an unmistakable sense of celebration on the island. Warm, sunny mornings, leisurely barefoot strolls along the beach, and the long-awaited hum of open coffee shops all contribute to the improvement in the collective mood of those of us who braved the winter here. Finally, it’s time to savor a morning latte as we gear up for the task of transforming our porches, yards, and decks in preparation for the first spring gathering of 2024.

It’s been a long, wet winter and I’m looking forward to some beautiful weather and some wonderful holiday meals. Whether cooking ham, lamb, brisket, fish, veggies, or a delicious brunch, you’re probably going to want to add some great wines to go with your holiday meals.
