The 8th Annual 2023 SHPOA Amateur Photo Contest, through Sept. 3, stoneharborpoa.org
The Stone Harbor Property Owners Association’s photo contest is open to all amateur photographers. Submit by e-mail (photocontest@stoneharborpoa.org) up to three photographs taken while in Stone Harbor in 2023. Examples of pictures include the beaches, ocean, bay, gardens, birds and wildlife, people, and local points of interest in Stone Harbor. All photos submitted must be taken in the Borough of Stone Harbor. Contestants are asked to include their name, address, and phone number in their email submission, with 2023 SHPOA Photo Contest Entry as the subject.

National Night Out is designed to enhance the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement. Enjoy complimentary snacks and giveaways as well as a variety of free activities while the Stone Harbor and Avalon police departments each host a variety of interactive law enforcement and safety displays.

CMC Animal Shelter and Adoption Center Event, Avalon Free Public Library, 11:30am-12:30pm, avalonfreelibrary.org
Would you like to learn more about Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center and help our furry friends? View the shelter’s animals ready for adoption and you might just find your new best friend! During the month of August, drop off unopened dog and cat food, and new blankets to benefit the Cape May County Animal Shelter.

You’re invited to join the Avalon History Center for a “Night at the Museum.” Come in your PJs! They’ll provide the snacks! This event is suggested for children 8 years and older and registration is required due to limited capacity. Call the History Center (609-967-0090) to register your child.

Pop-up @ trendz with the Jenna Blake collection, 209 96th St., Stone Harbor
View an expanded collection of Blake’s vintage-inspired collection that combines unusual complementary hues, bold shapes and textures that are meant to be layered to perfection. The antithesis of trendy, Blake creates pieces to be treasured, inspiring a personal collection that reflects you and worthy to be passed down to the next generation.

Nineties crafts are back in this summer series. This week it’s perler beads! Make 8-bit crafts to take home.

Hosted by Stephen and Gina Harbaugh of Harbaugh Custom Homes, the event will feature dinner, cocktails, live music and an auction. All proceeds from the George’s House Gala will be allocated to build the first physical George’s House to help those in need get back on their feet.

Elena Bond, presenting her first exhibit at Ocean Galleries, captures every scene with her own compelling expressive form of impressionism. An absolutely beautiful and unique collection of paintings and diverse range of subjects, Bond connects us to universal memories such as times at the shore strolling the boardwalk, playing in the ocean, and the stolen moments in between.

Attendees will learn all about the History Center and its artifacts through tours and fun activities. This event is suggested for ages 8-12; attendees under 8 must be accompanied by a legal guardian.

Local expert, educator, and author Pat Sutton will lead a tour of two private yards in Avalon that have embraced gardening for wildlife. See and learn how they have made a difference in our local community. Hear about the joy native plantings have brought these property owners by drawing in butterflies and birds!

New Avalon mayor John McCorristin will be the featured speaker with the State of the Borough followed by a question-and-answer session. In addition, the Avalon Home and Land Owners Association will elect its new board. The event starts with breakfast snacks and refreshments at 8:30am before the formal program starts at 9am.

History Center Lecture: The Delaware River: An Illustrated Journey, Tennis Building, 250 39th St., 1-2pm, avalonfreelibrary.org
Author and illustrator Hal Taylor takes you on a journey of the Delaware River. Learn about the original inhabitants, European explorers and their settlements, and the development of the earliest industries.

Join Pastor William Kelly of St. Brendan the Navigator Parish for the annual Wedding of the Sea celebration for the Assumption of Virgin Mary. There will be an open-air Mass followed by a procession to the beach, where Father Kelly will go out on a boat with the Stone Harbor Beach Patrol to bless the sea by throwing a wreath into the ocean. All are welcome. Bring a chair and or blanket for Mass.

Kids are invited to join Avalon Mayor John McCorristin for a morning of fishing at the boardwalk. There are only 25 spots available so registration is recommended. Registration begins in person at Avalon Community Hall in August.

This indoor slide program held at Avalon Community Hall will be followed by a Q & A session, led by Pat Sutton. Learn more about transforming your yard into a haven for birds, butterflies, dragonflies and more! Sutton will showcase native trees, shrubs, vines, wildflowers and even weeds that are beneficial to birds and other wildlife.

The Bay Atlantic Symphony presents a new Symphony by the Sea series at Surfside Park on the fourth Sunday of each month this summer. August’s performance is Sunday In the Park. The Bay Atlantic Brass quintet performance features genres of music from a killer Tango to Bohemian Rhapsody. The artists will include five members of the Bay Atlantic Symphony Brass Quintet, accompanied by a full percussion Trap Set.
