Bracing for Impact: Navigating Cape May County’s Stormy Seasons

Cape May County has experienced everything from tropical cyclones to powerful nor’easters. Join meteorologist Joe Martucci of “Cup A Joe Weather & Drone” at the Avalon Library for an engaging session focused on preparedness, awareness, and evacuation planning during extreme weather events. Learn how to stay informed and ready when storms strike.

Fall Felting Workshop

Join the Avalon Free Public Library for a fun and hands-on felting workshop where you’ll learn to create handmade felted pumpkins – perfect for autumn décor or gifting! This class is great for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced felters. Drop-in Flu Shot Clinic

Stop by for a drop-in flu clinic with Acme Pharmacy at the Avalon Free Public Library. Flu shots are free with most insurances – just bring your ID and insurance card. Both regular and high-dose vaccines will be available while supplies last.

Music with Friends: A Concert to Benefit Friend In Need

Join Friend In Need for Music with Friends at the Lazy Bass (5 Old N. Wildwood Blvd., North Wildwood). Health Ease: Bone Health and Fall Prevention

Presented by the Cape May County Department of Health, this program was developed through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.

George Mason & the Founding of the Nation

American Red Cross Blood Drive

Mark your calendar to participate in the American Red Cross Blood Drive on Monday, Oct. 14. The church is located at 9212 Third Ave. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are encouraged through the American Red Cross website.

Tea Time at the Avalon History Center

Fall Beach Sweep

Join Clean Ocean Action and the Borough of Stone Harbor for the Fall Beach Sweep to help scour the beaches for debris. Volunteers should bring gloves and dress appropriately for the weather. Trash bags and trash pickers will be provided.

Railroads, Tourism & Commuters at the Jersey Shore

Once considered a desolate coast, the Jersey Shore became a vacation hub thanks to the railroads, which brought day-trippers and summer visitors alike. As technology shifted, these rail lines adapted to serve commuters, reshaping the shore’s identity. Bill Elwell explores this history at the Avalon Library through vintage timetables and advertisements.

Watercolor Zentangle

Discover Zentangle—a simple, relaxing drawing method that turns basic patterns into beautiful art. In this 90-minute class, you’ll create your own design using “Inktense” pencils, a paintbrush, and a graphic pen. Registration opens Sept. 24 for Avalon property owners and Oct. 10 for all others. Fall Dune Grass Planting

Happy Halloween! Register your property for the Trick-or-Treat route and a representative from the Stone Harbor Recreation Department will drop off a wooden pumpkin to mark your house as a part of the festivities. Pick up your map at the 82nd Street recreation building and get ready for a night of fun!

Avalon Lions Club Fall Concert: The Fabulous Greaseband

In Concert: John Walter Cape Community Band

Founded in 1996 by Avalon resident John Walter, the John Walter Cape Community Band has been delighting audiences across Cape May County with its lively and diverse performances. This year’s concert theme, “Fun in the Sun,” promises an entertaining mix of music that will have your toes tapping and hands clapping. Bring the whole family to the Avalon Free Public Library for a feel-good performance that will appeal to all ages.

Savor September Festival

Tim Kerr Charities Point to Point Bay Swim

This event benefits Tim Kerr Charities and is a great way to familiarize yourself with open-water swimming. Avalon History Center Presents: Colonial Taverns of New Jersey

Summer Spotlight Series: Dr. Doug Tallamy
Author Doug Tallamy returns to Avalon! Using chickadees and other wildlife as guides, Dr. Tallamy will explain how plants that evolved in concert with local animals provide for their needs better than plants that evolved elsewhere. In the process, he shows how creating living landscapes by sharing spaces with other living things will not reduce our pleasurable garden experiences but enhance them.

Family Fun Week
Wrap up the summer with Avalon Library’s Family Fun Week, featuring special events Monday through Friday. Monday will feature the Penguin Pointers from Jenkinson Aquarium. Tuesday will be an all-ages Story Time, Wednesday will feature The Spoon Man, and Thursday will feature a Magic and Illusion Workshop. Cedar Island 5K Swim
It’s time to make a splash and test your swimming stamina again. Join in this counterclockwise swim sponsored by Tim Kerr Charities that goes with the current in the beautiful back bays of Avalon. Swim all the way around Cedar Island, a marsh island at the north end of Avalon’s back bay. This event was voted one of the top 100 swims in America. Proceeds will go to the Challenged Athletes Foundation’s Operation Rebound, which supports injured veterans and first responders.

St. Brendan the Navigator Parish Wedding of the Sea
All are welcome to join Father Raymond Gormley, the pastor of St. Brendan the Navigator Parish, for the annual Wedding of the Sea celebration. There will be a 10:30am outdoor mass for the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, followed by a procession to the beach and ocean. The pastor will then be taken in a boat by the Stone Harbor Beach Patrol to bless the sea.
