Days Gone By: 1964

These days, it seems everyone has an opinion about the businesses that have come and gone in Avalon and what might have been. Here’s a fascinating glimpse into one vision from 1964. This illustration comes from a recently restored sales brochure belonging to Phil Mataluci, one of the property’s two owners. Phil’s vision for a pool on 20th Street did come to life, providing years of enjoyment for hotel guests. Interestingly, the rendering doesn’t include the legendary Little P, which would later occupy the Dune Drive frontage for more than half a century. It makes you wonder how different Avalon’s business district might have looked if history had unfolded another way.
