Lions Club Golf Outing A Winner
Winners of the Avalon Golf Tournament: Daniel Klemperer, Eric Maxon, Scott Horowitz, and Julian Freeman

The foursome of Daniel Klemperer, Eric Maxon, Scott Horowitz, and Julian Freeman won the Avalon Lions Club’s annual Golf Classic on June 15 at the Union League National Golf Club in Cape May Court House. Their names will be engraved on the Covington Cup.
From the first tee to the final putt, the event was a celebration of golf, community, and giving back.
Tournament profits were a record high of $77,000. The Avalon Lions will use the proceeds to support various causes in the community. The golf tournament is the most successful fundraiser of the year for the club, according to Holly Rennie, a Lions Club member and a board member of the Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children.
The golf tournament is named after Chuck Covington, a charter member of the Avalon Lions who died in 2023 at 89. He started this tournament to provide a major fundraising opportunity for the community. The tournament has been running for more than 15 years.
Breakfast was served for participants at 8am, and the tournament itself ran from 10am to 2pm, but this was more than just a golf tournament. After the last putts, there was lunch and an open bar hosted for the players at 2pm, as well as an auction that helped raise money for Cape May County organizations. For the first time, the auction was held in person and online, and it closed at 2:30pm that day.
“We get donated items throughout Avalon,” said club member Kelly McHugh, also a board member of the Diller Home. “It really helps to bring in more money for the funding that goes to charitable organizations …
“Proceeds from this event are donated to charitable organizations throughout Cape May County and directly benefit our local community. Recipients include veterans’ organizations, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), Volunteers in Medicine, and the Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children, which provides free summer camp experiences for children who are blind or visually impaired.”
The Avalon Lions also host several other fundraising events throughout the year to benefit the community.
