This presentation is titled “From Home and Hearth to the Battle: Black Presence in Colonial West & East Jersey.” Ellen Alford will discuss how white, black, and Native American men fought on both sides during the War of Independence. During five years from 1776-80, New Jersey was where soldiers, slaves, natives, and common citizens were in the crosshairs. Black and native people lived and worked in the state during this time and contributed to the war in ways they considered significant to their freedom.
