Days Gone By

Since we are in the swing of summer, let’s take a look back at the summer of 1970. Here’s the Avalon Beach Patrol getting ready to compete in Avalon’s town races – a chance to find out who the best swimmers and rowers were. To the far left is Jim O’Brien. The guard pointing, in the blue trunks, is Mike Smith, and the guard to the far right is the Honorable Ray Batten, now a retired New Jersey Superior Court Judge. Oh, and the guy holding the oar is a 16-year-old rookie named David Kerr. Yes, the David Kerr from the Kerr Memorial Lifeguard Championships. And for the record, O’Brien and Smith won the doubles championship that evening.
