Letter from the Editor
By Monica Coskey
Dear Readers,
After a long, cold, snowy winter on Seven Mile Beach, there is something especially welcome about the arrival of spring. Following months of bitter temperatures, snow packed on the ground, and even frozen bay waters, it feels good to look ahead to longer days, warmer sunshine, and all the energy that comes with a new season.
This issue captures that seasonal shift, with stories that celebrate the people, traditions, and places that make our community so special. One of the highlights is “The Shiver King’s Family Goes Way Back with the Borough” by Dave Bontempo, a great piece that reflects the fun, spirit, and deep local roots behind the Stone Harbor Shiver, one of the island’s most beloved winter traditions.
You’ll also enjoy “Avalon Garden Club Blooms Into Its 50th Spring” by Jack Byrne, celebrating five decades of beautifying Avalon and the dedicated volunteers behind it. Dave Bontempo’s “Facing Challenges: Two Candidates Running for Stone Harbor Borough Council” offers an informative look at leadership and the future of Stone Harbor. And for those who enjoy a step back in time, “Signs of Times Gone By In Avalon” by Dave Coskey and “Small Houses, Big History” by Mary Byrne Lamb provide meaningful glimpses into the stories that shaped our towns.
As we begin to spend more time outdoors again, Jean Miersch’s “A Spring Sunset Gathering” is a perfect seasonal read, capturing the simple beauty of coming together with friends and family as the days grow longer.
Be sure to check out Kathy Todaro’s wine column as well, a perfect complement to spring entertaining and gatherings.
Spring also brings a renewed sense of energy across the island, with a full calendar of events, gatherings, and activities that bring neighbors and visitors together. Be sure to take a look at our Events at a Glance section to see what’s happening around town as we head into the season.
As always, thank you to our advertisers whose support makes the Seven Mile Times possible. Because of them, we are able to share the stories that connect our community and bring this publication to you free of charge.
Here’s to leaving winter behind and welcoming all the promise of spring on Seven Mile Beach.
See you around town,
Sincerely,
Monica Coskey
