It seemed like just another July evening at Springer’s. But amid the ice cream-eating congregation stood a family hard to miss. The members assembled like an Army, decked out in T-shirts proclaiming Stone Harbor memories and a special occasion. This was the Blair Reunion, celebrating the extended family’s history here that goes back more than 100 years, one of the longest family threads on the island.

It’s amazing how quickly summer slips away; those long, lazy beach days always feel too short. The beaches are moving!

This fundamental truth is how I was introduced to the dynamics of beaches as an undergraduate student majoring in geology at Boston University. Prior to that, my experience with beaches was vastly different and largely tied to summer fun and mischief on the shores of the Long Island Sound.

Hallowell, a native of Harrisburg, Pa., holds a degree in criminology from West Virginia University. He previously served as a member of the Ocean City and Stone Harbor police departments. He resides in Avalon.
