Days Gone By

This Christmas photo, complete with tinsel and electric tree lights, will take us back 77 years to the year 1948. This is the home of John and Ella Meany located on Ocean Drive (called Third Avenue at that time), two houses from 23rd Street. John Meany was a borough commissioner and the grandfather of the youngster, here smiling from ear to ear. The youngster, who was obviously having a very merry Christmas, is Jack Erkert, the founder of the legendary Jack’s Place, and the subject of our Q&A in this issue on page 46. Seated in front of him are his parents, Martha Jean “Babe” and John. That’s Jack’s uncle, Pat Lyons, in the back next to the television. This photo is from 20-plus years before Avalon got cable television, and those old rooftop antennas weren’t the greatest. We’d bet the reception wasn’t too good on that set.
