Days Gone By - Neighborhood Grocers

Long before the days of Wawa on the Seven Mile Beach, there were local neighborhood grocers. Bud’s Market and Avalon Market are still both operating in Stone Harbor and Avalon today, but long gone are Sam’s Market, Lena’s, Gehringer’s, and Kline and Schimek’s 21st Street Market. Kline and Schimek’s was operated by Lowell Schimek in what had been the old A&P location and then the Pioneer Market location on 21st Street between Dune and Ocean Drives. This is the produce section of the 21st Street Market, which for a time operated 12 months a year. “Lowell’s” as most people referred to it, had a full meat department, a bakery department (supplied by Latimer’s Bakery in Wildwood) and a full line of groceries. This month marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of Lowell Schimek. The market closed shortly after his passing.
